Our Mission

In response to Christ's call, the mission of Ascension Lutheran Church is to provide a means for all people to experience God's grace with open hearts, minds, and arms, through sharing the Good News of Christ's love and forgiveness.

Our Beliefs

We believe the Bible is God's word given to us.   Written by human authors, and inspired by God, the Bible is the ultimate source of truth and relevant to our everyday life.  We believe God is and always has been, revealing himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, serving one divine purpose.

Our Lutheran Heritage

Lutherans believe we are saved by the grace of God.  Although we cannot help that we are sinful in nature, when we believe in Jesus Christ and His atoning death on the cross for our sins, we receive the gift of salvation, help, and guidance from the Holy Spirit leading us into Godly living and service.  We know that when we fail, we can fully seek forgiveness, and God is faithful and just to forgive us our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Our History

In September of 1987, a small group of Lutherans gathered with Pastor Bill Funk - a pastor serving a large, urban congregation in Columbus, Ohio - to prayerfully consider building a Lutheran mission church in Louisville's eastern suburbs. Two months later, Pastor Funk moved to Louisville, accepting the challenge God had laid before him as our Pastor and mission developer. Ascension's first church service in March 1988, was ~ 25 faithful Christians renting a high school classroom for Sunday worship service.  In March 1992, the Ascension Lutheran Church was dedicated, with 376 members in attendance. Today, Ascension continues to thrive and welcome new believers from all backgrounds.

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God."
